B Bracket Finals

Maple Valley 7 - Nathan Hale 6

Maple Valley View: In the most exciting championship game in recent memory, Maple Valley successfully defended its B Division title with a 7-6 win over Nathan Hale in sudden death overtime.  Congratulations Hale on a truly great season.  You looked and played like champions all year!  You were well coached and played disciplined lacrosse at both ends of the field.  But this year the fat lady sang for the Vandals of Maple Valley. Hale started off strong with goals by Eric Weitz and Stephen Heller, but MV answered with goals from attackmen Josh Staudt and Brian Johnson to tie it up.  Then, with 2 seconds left in the quarter, MV took the lead with an outside high shot by Johnson.  Hale answered quickly in the
second with a goal by Ben Morris.  Four minutes later co-captain Andy Scanlon put MV back on top with a drive and shot on goal.  Michael Lowther quickly answered with his only score and two minutes later Hale took the lead on Heller's second goal of the game.  Leading 5-4 at half, Hale played hard throughout the 3rd quarter, extending its lead to 2 goals on Heller's third unassisted goal of the day.  In the fourth, Hale attempted to play a settled offense, but the Vandals kept the pressure on and Hale committed 4 of its 8 penalties in the final period.  With six minutes left in the game, junior Travis Cornelison scored on an outside shot.  One goal behind, MV kept the pressure on and, with 32 seconds left in the game, sophomore Brian Johnson tied it up.  Maple Valley won the face-off and promptly ignored the settled plays called for by
the coaches.  Brian Johnson took a feed from midfield, beat his defenseman, and notched MV's second championship in as many years with his 4th goal of the game.  MV's goalie, Nate Holstein, finished the day with 11 saves, while the defensive work of co-captain Cody Kunning and juniors Weston Butt, Adam Running, and Robbie Totten kept the high scoring Hale attack under control.
Kudos to all 38 MV players, 28 rookies and 10 second year players.  You worked hard from day one and never quit trying to improve!  In its first two seasons, the Vandals have won two championships with a combined record of 25 and 3.  This year 6 Vandals received league recognition: co-captain Andy Scanlon, All-Division First Team Attack;  junior Travis Cornelison, All-Division First Team Midfield and Vail All-Star Team; co-captain Isaac Pulkinnen, All-Division First Team Midfield;  junior
Weston Butt, All-Division First Team Defense;  Nathan Holstein, All-Division First Team Goalie and Vail All-Star Team;  and junior Adam Running, All-division Second Team Defense.  Congratulations gentlemen! Next year, Maple Valley will field teams in both the A and B Divisions. Thanks for a great season everyone!

Maple Valley 8 - Port Angeles 1

MV View: MV traveled to PA and came away with a hard fought 8-1 victory in the B semi-finals.  The Vandals played with more discipline than in recent

assist while Nate Holstein had 10 saves in goal.  Junior defenseman Weston Butt led the D with 4 ground balls, 2 takeaways and 1 shot.  PA -

Maple Valley 5 - Nathan Hale 8

Maple Valley View: MV hosted Hale last night and suffered its first ever loss at home. A very disciplined and well coached Raider team came out fast and furious, taking a4 - 0 lead in the first quarter. The Vandals scored two unanswered goals in the 2nd, but Hale's ball control and ball movement proved just too much for MV as the game was never in doubt for Hale. As the frustration grew, MV committed numerous penalties which kept Hale's offense on the field and man-up. Great game Hale! Good luck in the playoffs; hopefully we will see you in the finals and give you a better game.

Maple Valley 15 - Franklin 4

Maple Valley View: Thank you Franklin for a hard fought game. The score does not reflect how hard you played for all 4 quarters. But the MV shooters got hot with Brian Johnson scoring 5 goals on six shots and Isaac Pulkinnen coring 4 on 6 shots. Weston Butt led the defense with a team high 9 ground balls while he and Adam Running each had 2 takeaways. Rookie goalie Mark Louvier finished out the game, making 2 saves on 4 shots while starter Nate Holstein had 9 saves on 10 shots on goal.

Maple Valley 13 - Bainbridge B 8

Maple Valley View: Thank you Bainbridge B for a well played game. The teams combined for only 1 slash, 1 hold, and two technical fouls. The first quarter was exciting with both teams seemingly scoring at will and MV taking a 5-4 lead into the 2nd. MV then settled down and outscored BI 6 to 2 in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. BI never quit, however, and played tough in the 4th, scoring two fast break goals. MV's Andy Scanlon continuted to show he is back from his bronchitis, scoring 5 goals on 9 shots, while Travis Cornelison continuned to play well at midfield, winning all 8 of his face-offs and scoring 4 goals on 8 shots. Other scoring came from Brian Johnson, Jon Clark, and Isaac Pulkkinen. The defense was led by co-captain Cody Kunning (2 ground balls and 3 takeaways), Robbie Totten, and Adam Running. All 37 MV players got playing time, including rookie goalie Mark Louvier. Good luck with the rest of your season, BI-B.

Maple Valley 7 - Curtis 3

Maple Valley View: Thank you Curtis for a hard fought game. The score does not indicate how evenly the teams played thru much of the game. It didn't help Curtis to have their best offensive player hobbled with a bad wheel. MV's Andy Scanlon, finally recovering from bronchitis, had his best game ever, however, with 3 goals and 2 assists. Other scoring came from attackman Brian Johnson and middies Issac Pulkinnen and Travis Cornelison. Nate Holstein had another fine game in goal with 18 saves on 21 shots. The defensive unit of Cody Kunning, Adam Running, and Robbie Totten combined for 7 ground balls and 6 takeaways. MV appears to be refocused again after a distracting two weeks with illness, senior projects, and Camp Casey duty. Good luck with the rest of your season Curtis!

Maple Valley 6 - Nathan Hale 5 (OT)

Maple Valley View: Thanks for a great game Nathan Hale! 6-5 overtime win! Hale showed a lot of skill at every position, but the MV players never gave up. MV took an early lead on two goals by Travis Cornelison and one by Isaac Pulkkinen. But Hale stormed back with 3 goals in the last minute of the first quarter. The scored stayed tied going into the half when MV's goal by Cornelison at the horn was disallowed. By the end of the third quarter, Hale held a 5 - 4 lead. But midway thru the 4th quarter, MV's Andy Scanlon tied the game on a feed from middie Jon Clark. For the second game in a row, MV was faced with sudden death overtime. Hale won the face-off and got off a good shot, but goalie Nate Holstein made the last of his 28 saves and the fast break was on. At Hale's restraining line, Jon Clark fed attackman Brian Johnson who drove past his man and put a low shot into the net. Hale's Michael Lowther was largely unstopable, scoring 4 of NH's goals. But MV's Cornelison answered with three of his own. Despite the hard hitting, MV again had fewer personal fouls (2) than its opponent (3).

Maple Valley 6 - Bellevue 5 (OT)

Maple Valley View: MV's first foray onto artificial turf showed as they struggled to a 6-5 overtime win over a talented and tough Bellevue squad. MV took a 1 - 0 lead into the second quarter, but Bellevue dominated the 2nd quarter with 4 unanswered goals. MV players looked confused and flustered for much of that quarter, and it showed with numerous personal fouls. They regrouped in the 2nd half, however, and took a 5-4 goal lead with about 2 minutes remaining. Bellevue came back with the tying goal with 45 seconds left. Luckily, MV won the overtime faceoff and finished the game on Travis Cornelison's second goal of the night. MV's Brian Johnson led all scorers with 3 goals, while Cornelison added 2 plus an assist. Thank you Bellevue for a great game - you showed just how far our stick skills still need to develop.

Lakeside 8 - Maple Valley 3

Maple Valley View: With 22 rookies, Maple Valley travelled to Lakeside and were treated to a skill demonstration as the Lions beat the Vandals 8 to 3.  But for some outstanding goal keeping by senior Nate Holstein, the score could easily have been 18 to 3.  In 3 quarters of play, Nate made 17 saves on 20 shots on goal.  Freshman goalie Dustin Cavin played the third quarter and made 6 saves on 11 shots on goal.  Junior defenseman Adam Running led the team in takeaways with 3, while sophomore attachman Brian Johnson led the team in ground balls with 6.  All scoring came from the midfielders, with Isaac Pulkkinen, Travis Cornelison, and Matt Rohrbach each scoring unassisted goals.  The game was a great learning experience for Maple Valley;  they now see the level to which they must aspire. Thank you Lakeside for a great game - good luck in San Diego and with your season.
